DIY Affordable Bedroom Renovation

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

One of my goals is to share how to take an empty space and turn it into a cozy space that feels more like “home”-on a budget! There are always affordable ways to update your space while also making a huge impact. Rugs, new bedding or a new light fixture are great examples. This project was SO MUCH fun! I can’t say for sure if this design can be broken down into a specific “interior design box” but let’s just call it a cozy modern vintage cottage style. Thats a thing right? :,) If you follow me on instagram you’ve seen this entire process along the way! I share all the fun details in stories over there. Feel free to ask any questions you have about the items or colors used in this space.

Affordable spaces with a big impact

My husband and I had previously made custom bi-fold doors (check out that post here). I used iron ore by Sherwin Williams for the trim. It is such a beautiful muted black-charcoal color! It actually made my space look larger. The wall behind the bed is covered with MDF shiplap and painted that wall with Alabaster by Sherwin Williams.

The shiplap was was extremely easy to attach to the walls. I used my favorite nail gun (linked here) and home depot will cut your boards to size if needed! All the tiny holes were filled with white wood filler (linked here) before painting! We trimmed out the windows with 1X4’s and there really is no specific way to do this. We measured around the windows, cut the wood to size, attached them with the nail gun. Then we sanded, covered the holes with wood filler, caulked the edges and painted them!

I linked most of the decor below for the bedroom as well! The items I thrifted were the dresser, night stands, picture frame and vases. I did link similar items if you’re not the thrifty type! The Ikea dresser I linked-I’d replace the handles with black ones. The night stands could be sanded and then refinished with stain and a white wash for a vintage/cottage look. The thrifted dresser and night stands I sanded down (larger sander here) & (smaller sander here) and then stained and sealed them! Hardware is hobby lobby but I can’t find the links 🙁
